The 738-foot, Liberian-flagged vessel Golden Seas, operated by a Greek shipping company Allseas Marine, was due to reach Dutch Harbor in Alaska's Aleutian Islands on Tuesday, Coast Guard Petty Officer David Mosley said.
Once the crippled freighter is anchored, its crew plans to make repairs to allow it to resume its voyage, he said.
"The Coast Guard will monitor the repairs and certify the vessel is OK to go back to sea when we are satisfied that the repairs are done correctly," Mosley said.
The Golden Seas was headed from British Columbia to the United Arab Emirates with a cargo of canola seed when it lost power in its main engine early Friday, leaving the ship unable to maneuver in rough, icy seas, Mosley said.
Several ships and aircraft were dispatched to go to the freighter's assistance, and the ocean-going tugboat Tor Viking II, under contract to Shell, reached the Golden Seas late on Saturday.
In addition to its cargo of canola seed, the ship was carrying up to 451,561 gallons of bunker fuel, 11,780 gallons of diesel and 10,000 gallons of lube oil when it lost power, according to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation.
